Administration 1931-1963

The content upon Native affairs describes the perceived progress made during each year, in relation to the Government's stated aim of increasing 'the training and education of the Africans towards a higher intellectual, moral and economic level than that which they had reached when the Crown assumed the responsibility for the administration of this territory'. The administrative nature of the reports upon Native Affairs is evident in their focus upon jurisdictions, governance structures and negotiations between local chiefs. The Native Welfare Committee reports cover a range of what would later become departmental remits, prior to the introduction of those departments, and serve as a repository for administrative information not deemed appropriate for inclusion in the reports upon Native Affairs. The reports upon Departmental Activities commence nine years after the last report of the Native Welfare Committee and from the more formal nature of those reports it is apparent that a more formal departmental structure has been adopted in the interim. Commencing three years after the last report upon Departmental Activities, the Public Service Commission was created in the same year as the Police and Judicial commissions. The early 1960's were a period of systemic change as governmental powers were devolved from the Governor to departments, this change is covered in more detail in Public Service Commission reports and especially so within the 1962 Annual Report. Finance 1911-1966

These Financial Reports and Statements include commonplace elements such as Revenue, Income, and Expenditure; the main development between the earlier and latter reports is the increase in the level of narrative accompanying these records as the years progressed. The Estimates prior to and post the passing of the 1940 Development Act, enable the reader to study the impact of this Act's introduction through comparison. The Audit for 1918-19 includes a reference to a fire at the Audit Office in 1919, it does not state which records were lost in the fire. Reports of the Registrar of Insurance were rendered neccessary by the passing of the 1956 Insurance Act. Those reports' main focus is upon the development of that industry as a whole and the removal of any barriers to it's success. The Customs and Excise reports commence with one report which covers the years 1954-1959, this report also outlines the reason why the department was created. Read more →

Natural Resources - Arable and Animal Husbandry 1909-1965

The large number of reports which are grouped here rather belie the scarcity and poverty of Nyasaland's natural resources. The most extensive are Agriculture, Veterinary, and the Geological Survey. From 1944 onwards the Agriculture reports are divided in two, with Part II generally being devoted to Experimental Work. The early Agriculture reports also include some coverage of Veterinary and Forestry work, which later became separate reports. Natural Resources with regard to Arable and Animal Husbandry is a broad category which incorporporates reports upon the Provincial Natural Resources Board, Agriculture, Agricultural Production and Marketing Board, Veterinary, Animal Husbandry Research, Game, Fish and Tsetse Control, Fisheries Research, Tea Research Station, Lands and Survey, and Forestry.
