Prison Ships and Depots in Overseas Locations - Barbados, 1812-1815

These records indicate that this base was mainly used as a stopping-off point from which those captured would be either be discharged to another part of the penal system or exchanged. The data on prisoners is held in 2 General Entry Books which cover the period from August 1812 until March 1815. The latter of these two entry books is the only example of a type 3 General Entry Book within this collection. As part of a type 3 entry book, the records in this volume are focussed on when the prisoner was sent to and discharged from hospital; these entries reference the records in the preceding book which has resulted in them being much more concise than those records. Prison Ships and Depots in Overseas Locations - Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1812-1815

These records indicate that this base was mainly used as a stopping-off point from which those captured would be either be discharged to another part of the penal system or exchanged. The data on prisoners is held in 7 General Entry Books which cover the period from June 1812 until March 1815. Commencing with two volumes of type 2 General Entry Books of prisoners in process between June 1812 and January 1815; these records are succeeded by two type 2 General Entry Books of first French then American prisoners, the former covers June to July 1812, the latter is undated and arranged non-sequentially. The fifth volume contains a list of names of American POWs sent home on parole under a blanket parole agreement dated 24 August 1813; other details such as how they were captured are included, but the ad hoc nature of this book's use has resulted in it containing far less information than purposed-designed parole books. The sixth volume contains lists of the British troops and the American troops who were exchanged, the lists run side-by-side; however, the dates next to the troops' names suggest that the location of a British soldier's name next to an American soldier's name does not indicate that the one has been traded for the other. The final the volume records releases, paroles and exchanges of prisoners whose primary entries are in ADM 103/167 and 168. Read more →
