Working Class Movement Library

Collection: Radicalism and Popular Protest in Georgian Britain, c. 1714–1832    Volumes    Working Class Movement Library
A satirical illustration captioned The Champions of Reform destroying the Monster of Corruption. A dragon-like figure with 7 human heads appears on the right of the image. Three well dressed men appear on the left, one batting at the dragon-like figure with a broom, and another with a sword. The third man stands and watches.
This volume contains a curated selection of sources from the Working Class Movement Library (WCML) in Salford (UK) that chart the development of radical political thought and popular protest in Britain during the Georgian period. The volume contains 40,201 images, divided into over 600 documents. These sources shed light on the diverse individuals and movements that challenged political authority and demanded constitutional and electoral reform.
The volume includes the works of Thomas Paine and other radical writers, as well as political pamphlets, radical periodicals, reports of meetings, accounts of state trials, speeches and addresses, records of strikes, and material related to the Peterloo massacre in 1819. The volume also contains handbills, satirical prints, poems, and songs.
Together, these sources offer valuable insight into the organisation of popular political activity and the contested nature of power in Georgian Britain.
